The Sobie Family - Ministry in Ukraine

  It was an astounding comeback.
Five years ago, in what was called Ukraine’s Orange Revolution, Victor Yanukovich exited the scene of Ukrainian politics in what appeared to be finality and disgrace.  The Moscow-supported presidential candidate who had, in his youth, served two jail sentences for assault, had his seeming victory overturned after his followers were accused of fraudulently rigging the election.  Hundreds of thousands poured onto the streets to protest, and Mr. Yanukovich was forced to comply with a re-vote that resulted in his loss.
And yet, in February of 2010, the people of Ukraine brought Victor Yanukovich back to the highest position of power in the nation, and he now stands as Ukraine’s president-elect!  The current prime minister and heroine of the Orange Revolution, Yulia Timoshenko, lost the election by just 3.5 percent, but the margin was significant enough and the elections were judged to be fair enough to apparently make it a done-deal.
Observing the whole drama unfold has been a strong reminder of one unchanging reality in this world - that people do change.  They change their opinions, their images, and their views sometimes as often as their circumstances change!
Recently, during our family devotional times, we have been moving through the book of Judges.  The children have listened with fascination to the continual cycle of Israel turning to idol worship, then being chastened, then turning back to God and being delivered, then turning back to idols again and again... Finally, one of the children said, “Why does God keep forgiving them?  They’re just going to do it again!”
  It’s a good question.
The beautiful answer, however, is that God keeps showing mercy because, although men falter, change, and waver - He never does!  He never changes!  James 1:17 says that “With Him there is no variableness...”  In Malachi 3:7, He says, “For I am the Lord, I change not!”  In the New Testament we read that He “is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 3:7).
When I see the instability of this world and its systems... when I observe before my very eyes the chameleon-like changing of man’s views and opinions...when people who once stood for one thing now stand for something else... when, as the songwriter said, “change and decay in all around I see”:  what a calm and relief it is to look into the face of God and see One who never changes!  “Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not!  As Thou hast been Thou forever will be!”
In this world of shifting sand, it’s truly wonderful to be anchored in the Solid Rock of Ages.
So, what does tomorrow hold for Ukraine?  Great question!  One thing will not change, however, and that is this simple reality:  The people and circumstances will change.  That’s why we pray that we will be light for Christ to show them the only One Who never changes, and can bring the stability and peace that their souls long for.

The Wind of Change
